Why you should play more Games
Especially Games you suck at
It’s a great shame that the mainstream media has for so long been single-mindedly intent on bashing the gaming industry and creating the dishonest impression that games are a sin with no redeemable positive qualities whatsoever, for whilst it’s true that game can be a bad thing (most notably in the case of videogame addiction) games can also be a very good thing. So much of the positive benefits of games have been lost thanks to this negativity, but finally it seems the tides might be turning. So far from playing less games, there’s plenty of evidence pointing to the fact that we should play more games, specifically, more different types of games, and particularly ones we are bad at.
Already on Arolemodel.com we have looked at the positive psychological benefits of several of gaming’s most popular genres. We’ve looked at the benefits of shooting games, the benefits of platform games, RPGs and fighting games. Whilst these articles are too extensive to be covered in full here, it’s worth pointing out some of the positives of gaming in order to illustrate why we should play more different types of games.
Why you Should Play RPGs
RPGs are laden with a great sense of exploration. They reward us for being curious, for seeking out new areas, for exploring every nook and cranny of the game world. RPGs teach us to reach out, to seek new answers new areas of exploration, essentially, to broaden our perspectives.
Why you should play Shooters
Shooting games have one huge benefit that completely eclipses all other benefits of the genre: living in the moment. So often in life do we dwell on thoughts, umm-ing and ahh-ing, procrastinating, getting nothing done. Shooting games, by way of their action-packed nature, teach us to live in the moment, to go with the flow, to act on impulse.
Why you should play Fighting Games
Fighting games like Skullgirls teach us to make quick, quality decisions based on a vast amount of information. We must know our moves, know our combos, know what counters what and at a high level of play even know frame data, and we must make quick and quality decisions in the heat of the moment based upon this information.
Why you should play Platform Games
Platform games (especially the more recent ones like Mario Galaxy) introduce us to a world of creativity. The very space in platform games seems to come to life, turning flat lands into playgrounds. They teach us to look creatively at our environments and as such are great inspirations for our more artistic sides.
This is a look at just a few of the benefits video games can offer. Unfortunately, if you are a typical gamer, you most likely only see one of these groups of benefits. Shooting fans sees the benefits of shooting games, RPG fans of RPGs and so on. In other words, you are missing out on a huge amount of benefits that gaming offers you. On the next page we’ll look at yet more types of game benefits before explaining why you should broaden the range of games you play.
