Why I Wish I'd Got a Degree in Video Game Design

Hi whoever might be reading this. Welcome to a shamefully self-centred blog entry from myself, Paul, the guy who writes this site. In this article I’ll mostly be explaining why I, as an actor and a writer and a guy obsessed with characters, wish I’d gotten a degree in video game design from a game design college or university.

Let me start by saying that I did actually do a degree in Innteractive Enntertainment Technology–which was the closest thing to a game design course when I was at uni. Unfortunately, it wasn’t what I expected at all. I had expected a course in video game design to talk about errrr games. But instead it covered all manner of science bullshit.

After my non- game design degree I, being totally obsessed with characters, became an actor (in order to bring characters to life on stage) an then a writer (to create characters on the page) and now write about characters, both fictional and non fiction, here on ARoleModel.com. But I still kinda wish I had had the opportunity to do video game design classes. Why? Because, even though I can still continue my obsession with characters through writing and acting, there’s something unique about gaming.

With writing and acting you can show a character and you can rely on the reader / viewer to use their imagination to bring that character to life. But that’s not the same a creating a character and then literally allowing a person to play as that character themselves.

There’s a magic to gaming, especially in this day and age where we have amazing characters like Connor from Assassin’s Creed 3, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider and other great characters. Nothing else is like gaming. There is no other form of character as involving as gaming characters. And that”s why I wish I’d taken a proper course at one of the video game design schools.

So I guess I’ll love playing a Connor from Assassin’s Creed 3, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider and other great characters, while being able to create characters myself through acting and writing. Still, somewhere at the back of my mind, I’ll always wonder what might have happened had I taken a video game design program.

Unless, of course, I just enrol on one of the video game design schools online. . . .  .Hmmmmm.

So how about you? Have you been to university? Did you choose the right course? Do you wish you’d done something different?
