Cast your mind back a few years to 2011 and, if you’re a fan of zombie games, you may remember Laughing Jackal’s OMG Zombies! as a PSP and later Vita title. Now, Laughing Jackal have revisited their title, revamped it (re-zombied it? no, bad play on words, sorry) and are now releasing it on Steam with more levels and more undead bastards who want to munch on your brain.
… this zombie actually wanted milk, but it just didn’t work out for him.
Anyway, you’re playing a lone soldier who must blast his way through lines of the undead and make his way to a helicopter area to flee. However, one does not simply get to the chopper, as one is not Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator. . .
Man I am digressing too much in this review.
So anyway, OMG-Zombies takes place on one single screen which is mostly black and white. Despite the fact that you’re playing a soldier it’s your puzzle skills that will be tested, rather than your shooting skills. Shoot a zombie and it’ll blow up, and if a znother zombie is nearby it will wipe it out too, causing a chain reaction of exploding zombies. Awesome. Clearly, that’s very very awesome.
You’ve only got one rifle, thought, and three bullets, and you need to kill enough zombies to be awarded a medal. The medals are based on the percentage of zombies you killed, and different medals give different amounts of cash for upgrades. You’ll need to get platinum medals in order to get enough cash to buy upgrades to complete later levels, which adds plenty of replayablility and ups the game’s longevity. It also makes for a high degree of difficulty.
If all this sounds great, OMG-Zombies isn’t without it’s odd hiccough. For starter, the audio isn’t going to thrill anyone. There’s only a few tracks and they’re really not that great. But I don’t want to harp on about the music as it does a disservice to what is an accomplished development.
OMG-Zombies is a laugh, packed full of blood and with enough uniqueness to set it apart. Not perfect, but definitely worth a playthrough. Were more time given to getting the audio right I would give this a four out of five, as I definitely had fun playing it, but as it stands, my overall score is. . .
Overall: 3.5 out of 5.
