New Super Mario Bros. 2 Review

New Super Mario Bros. 2 delivers everything you have come to expect from a Mario game. Sadly, it fails to deliver anything un-expected, anything new, anything to really set New Super Mario Bros. 2 apart from the pack. There are a few new power-ups and a focus on coin collecting, but it’s very much the same old Mario. Is that enough?

New Super Mario Bros. 2 Review: Design

Nintendo are sticking to their guns. New Super Mario Bros 2 follows the simplicity of its predecessor with running and jumping action through gorgeous brightly coloured worlds.

The levels are beautifully designed. Very few games feature level design as good as this. You will want to play through them several times. It’s the very best of Mario level design, but again, what it isn’t is innovative. Nintendo haven’t produced any new ideas with New Super Mario Bros. 2. The enemies and traps are placed perfectly, the way the characters move to the beat is a gorgeous bonus detail, and the pacing is faultless.

There are a couple of ways in which New Super Mario Bros. 2 offers something new. First off, there is the two player co-op mode (though it requires two systems and two copies of the game). “Coin Rush” mode has you chasing after coins in within a time limit; it’s an addictive bonus game that adds some longevity to New Super Mario Bros. 2, which is just as well, as longevity is not one of the game’s strengths.

New Super Mario Bros 2. Review: Longevity

Subpar longevity is New Super Mario Bros. 2’s biggest flaw. You’ll reach the end of the game in a few hours. Coin Rush and various secrets add to the longevity, but it’s still distinctly substandard. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a great game while it lasts, but it certainly isn’t going to last long.

New Super Mario Bros 2 Review: Controls

The controls of New Super Mario Bros. 2 are pretty much what you have come to expect. The movement is precise and the handling of the jumps is perfect. The controls are joyfully simple, making New Super Mario Bros. 2 a game even the most inexperienced of gamers can pick up and play.

The one issue with the controls is in cooperative mode. Because the two characters cannot occupy the same space, you’ll find yourself accidentally knocking into your partner, inadvertently causing their demise.

New Super Mario Bros 2 Review: Cooperative Play

It’s clear that New Super Mario Bros.2 has not been designed with coop in mind. There are no areas specifically designed for the mode. That doesn’t mean it’s not great fun, however. Provided you don’t get too annoyed by accidentally killing your partner from time to time, you’ll have a blast.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 Review: Overall

This is a truly fun game. It’s just not a new one. The controls are spot-on. The graphics are gorgeous. There’s everything you would expect from the best or Mario games. There just isn’t anything more than that. Still, a great game well worth a few hours of your time.

Overall: 8.3 / 10
