Aqua Kitty: milk Mine Defender has the best premise for any gamer EVER; seriously. A shortage of milk has led cats to seek out new sources. To get their paws on that milk they’ll have to overcome their fear and drill beneath the seabed in order to excavate naturally flowing full-fat milk.
Now, obviously, the premise doesn’t make much sense, what with cats being allergic to milk and all. But if you think a story about cats needs to make sense then frankly get the f**k out.
So anyway, Aqua Kitty: Milk Mine Defender is an arcade shooter that is a blast. It’s a clone of Defender, with waves of enemies, a radar wo show off-camera action, and tons of mechanical enemies. Oh, plus milk and cats. Can’t forget the milk and cats.
Aqua Kitty: Milk Mine Defender has two game modes. In the first you get automatic upgrades after each stage and can restart on the same level when you die. In the second you can choose your upgrades as you collect power-ups, but if you die you’ll be sent back to the beginning of the game. Neither one is better than the other, each being fun in its own way.
The game begins gently enough but before long things get chaotic as enemies attack at a blistering pace. You can use that to your advantage, however, as you get rewarded for combos when you use an explosive fish for multiple kills. More chain kills equates to more points, and your points are accumulated and added to a leaderboard at the end.
One of my favourite aspects of Aqua Kitty is the music. I have a big fat orange cat (who is awesome) and I can totally imagine him rocking out to the psychedelic chiptune music of this game. Listen to it here: https://soundcloud.com/electriccafe/sets/aqua-kitty-milk-mine-defender
So what’s BAD about Aqua Kitty? Dunno, honestly; for a game with such a bizarre and nonsensical premise, this is one game that ends up making a heck of a lot of sense. It’s an awesome homage to 16-bit games with excellent music, great sound and cats. Hard not to like such a game, really.
OVERALL: 4 out of 5.
