It’s bizarre that so little attention in the run-up to Assassin’s Creed 3 is being placed on the quality of the performance of its characters; their animation, their powerful body language, and other elements of character. So much focus is on gameplay and graphics alone, but these are but part of the year’s biggest game development. The latest sea battle promotional video for Assassin’s Creed 3 truly showed off the brilliance of the game’s artistry, so let’s take a look at some of the stunning art and characterisation of this latest reveal.
The Artistry of Assassin’s Creed 3’s Naval Battle
Connor Kenway awaits the battle
There”s amazing lighting in this shot of Connor Kenway and the ships. The rising sun in the morning softly bringing the ships to life lulls us to imagine life on the high seas as Connor stands in solitude, almost meditatively awaiting the battle ahead. His character is drowned in the mass construction of ship ladders and masts, that intertwine like a web in the mid-ground.
Master and Commander
The master and commander shows powerful body language in this screenshot. His chin, held high, gives him an air of authority. His arms are held out wide–which is a body language gesture showing power and confidence. He is revealing his chest and body, which again, in body language, shows extreme confidence. Throughout, the animator who has created this character has used body language to illustrate strength and confidence.
These body language pointers are important knowledge that all character artists and animators know. Whether they’ve attended animation school, taken a fine art degree or any kind of animation arts courses, any artist dealing with characters makes huge use of body language. Scientifically speaking, body language is 55% of all communication, so you can see how important this would be to games characters.
Lost in the fog of battle
Here we see a lonesome figure, his body almost seeming to reach outward or to feel the air inquisitively. He’s lost in the fog of battle, on a screen given atmosphere through its wash of grey. And in the background awaits the quietly approaching enemy ship. the air here is one of expectation. Battle is coming.
Screenshots like this reveal the brilliant artistry at work in Assassin’s Creed 3 and deserve to be given a lot of attention. If it were not for this artistry and understanding of body language, Assassin’s creed 3 would never have the strong sense of character and mood that it has. on the next page, we’ll look at another important element brining Assassin’s Creed 3 to life.
